Pump Rotor Impeller Repair Resimac SA.

Extending the Life of Critical Pump Systems.

When critical infrastructure begins to show its age, the challenge is not just repair, moreover it is restoration with long-term reliability in mind. This case is a 50-year-old turbine pump system located at a lake in Trentino Alto Adige, where severe cavitation damage had compromised two rotor impellers. The solution required more than a quick fix. It demanded a precise, durable, and environmentally resilient repair strategy.

How to Repair Cavitation Damage in Harsh Conditions?

Cavitation is one of the most destructive forces in pump systems. Over time, it erodes metal surfaces, weakens structural integrity, reduces operational efficiency and in this case, the damage was extensive. To make matters more complex, repairs had to be carried out during cold winter conditions, introducing additional challenges such as increased material viscosity and difficult application environments.

Pump cavitation: causes severe damage by forming and violently imploding vapor bubbles, which create shockwaves that erode impeller metal, damage seals/bearings, significantly reducing pump efficiency and lifespan. A gravel-like noise, this phenomenon results from low-pressure conditions at the suction side, often caused by small or restricted inlet piping, high fluid temperatures, or excessive suction lift.
Impeller Erosion: The most common damage is metal fatigue on the impeller, creating pitted, uneven surfaces.
Seal & Bearing Failure: High-pressure implosion shocks create vibrations that cause premature failure of mechanical seals and bearings.

The Resimac Pump Rotor Impeller Repair Solution.

Resimac SA implemented a tailored repair system designed to restore performance while ensuring long-term protection:

This combination of Resimac products, delivered both structural restoration and advanced surface protection.

What is the Resimac Precision Repair Process?

The Resimac repair process began with welding to restore the structural integrity of the most severely damaged impeller areas. Once rebuilt, the surfaces were refined using 101 Metal Repair Paste to eliminate imperfections and create a smooth, uniform profile. This step is critical, not only for aesthetics moreover for ensuring optimal coating adhesion and long-term durability.

With temperatures working against the team, 203 Super Flow was expertly applied in a single coat. Despite increased viscosity due to cold conditions, applicators maintained precise control over coating thickness, ensuring consistent and reliable coverage. For stationary components exposed to milder wear, 501 ARXL was applied efficiently in a single coat, providing robust abrasion resistance without unnecessary downtime.

Results: Performance, Efficiency, and Sustainability.

The outcome went far beyond simple repair:

  • Restored operational efficiency of the turbine pump
  • Enhanced durability under demanding environmental conditions
  • Reduced downtime through efficient application methods
  • Extended equipment lifespan, minimizing replacement costs

Importantly, this project also supported sustainability goals. By extending the life of existing equipment, the repair reduced material waste and lowered the environmental impact associated with full component replacement.

Why Resimac’s repair systems matters?

This case study highlights the versatility and performance of Resimac’s repair systems in real-world conditions. Whether dealing with extreme wear, environmental challenges, or aging infrastructure, Resimac solutions provide a reliable pathway to restoration and long-term protection.

For industries relying on critical pump systems, this message is clear: repair is not just maintenance, it is an opportunity to upgrade performance and sustainability at the same time.
