A desalination plant in Australia requires long-term protective solution for a stainless steel of the Torishima seawater intake pump and 18-meter carbon steel pipe risers. Due to the harsh marine environment, erosion and corrosion had caused significant damage to the equipment, impacting the plant’s efficiency. To extend the lifespan of the equipment and prevent future damage, a robust seawater pump refurbishment was conducted.

- Surface preparation involved abrasive blasting of the seawater pump and pipe risers to SSPC SP10 (NACE 2)/ISO 8504-1 SA2.5 standards.
- Damaged areas were rebuilt with 101 Metal Repair Paste.
- 203 Super Flow efficiency erosion-corrosion-resistant coating was applied at a nominal 250 microns per coat for comprehensive protection.

The stainless pipe and pump refurbishment began with a thorough cleaning of the pump and pipe sections to remove all contaminants and ingrained salts. After cleaning, the surfaces were abrasive blasted to achieve a surface profile suitable for effective adhesion of the repair materials. Stainless steel components were prepared using non-ferrous aggregate blasting.
Pitted sections of the steel were filled using Resimac 101 Metal Repair Paste. Once the paste had cured over a nominal 4 hour period, the repaired areas were machined to a smooth finish, restoring the surface profile. To protect the refurbished areas, two coats of 203 Super Flow were applied by brush and roller, each coat being 250 microns thick, providing a durable, abrasion resistant barrier for stainless steel.
